One surviving structure from the rail freight/St. Andrew’s Dock age is part of the massive ‘engine shed’ of the North Eastern Railway, now used by a haulage firm off Freightliner Way (Dairycoates). Engine sheds incorporated one or more turntables by which steam engines entering frontwards could be turned to exit form the shed at its next shift.
