Burial Committee minutes show that in October 1892 there were negotiations with the North Eastern Railway Company to buy their land then between the Cemetery and the rail line (still exists) to increase the capacity of the Cemetery. Undoubtedly one of the most interesting elements of the municipal cemeteries in Hull is Hull’s first crematorium (now disused) located towards the eastern end of Hedon Road Cemetery site (not normally visible from the main road), see above picture. Records at Hull History Centre state that this building was a working crematorium from 1901 –

Following the adoptive Burial Acts of the 1850s, with later amending legislation, Hull Corporation established two large municipal cemeteries by the end of the century – Western Cemetery, Spring Bank West from 1861 and Hedon Road Cemetery from 1875. Western Cemetery was in effect a continuation westward of the Hull General Cemetery site (see previous
