An easy one mile walk that takes in the eastern part of Beverley Westward.
I start at Grayburn Lane car park as I have to park there (very expensive). Exit on to Lairgate and on to North Bar within, possibly stopping off at Memorial Gardens, St. Mary’s Beverley’s first detached cemetery. On through the late medieval brick-built North Bar and then left along the York Road to the Westwood; these, sometimes known as Newbigin Pits, survive from open-cast chalk diggings, mostly by parishioners and parish officials. Walk south alongside the the ex-hospital which previous to that was the Beverley Union Workhouse. Immediately after turn east down a footpath leading to Woodlands and Wood Lane. The terrace of cottages on Woodlands are delightful to walk by and view the well-maintained house fronts and well tended front gardens, which local people take for granted but which are so lacking elsewhere, especially in Hull. Wood Lane is more cramped but central for amenities. Eventually back to Lairgate/North Bar Within.
Young beef cattle now back grazing the Westwood, and in considerable numbers. They follow their daily route around Newbigin Pits arriving, in my experience, to the eastern side about 4pm.
