Following Rachael’s assessment in Melton, drove into Hull. Went to basement café in House of Frazer for first time for about 20 years having previously assumed that it was closed. With C and A having closed down, and the issue of the building’s three ships mural being debated, H. of F. looking ‘tired’, the future of what stores remain looks bleak. A great pity as, although I am not much of a shopper, have always thought they presented an ‘all on one site’ interesting experience. An opportunity to ‘window shop’ without having to stand outside the window in the cold and wet. The prospect of getting everything delivered to your door by a mass of delivery vans is all very well but we are not troglodytes, getting out and about is life enhancing especially for those of us on modest incomes – the ‘go up town’ experience should not be lost. That is why I am very pleased to see that the pensioner’s travel concession card has survived the recession as it allows those that can to get out and about without having to count the pennies and thus lead a more varied life, albeit at a modest level.
The number of big powerful cars seen on the road gives a lie to the notion that the country cannot afford higher taxation to fund the N.H.S. and integrated social-care.
This morning heard on Radio Humberside (on Burnsy show) an interview with the general manager of a Hull based commissioning company which has been awarded the contract for the East Riding. His ability to spew management speak at a moment’s notice was, I have to admit, impressive. The only problem was I had no idea at the end of the interview what he or his company did. What is happening to the N.H.S.?
