7th April, 2020 Sculcoates 3.

Uncategorised / Richard Clarke

One aspect of the relatively small area called Trippett (s.p.b.) that I know something of is that between 1775 and 1855 it was the site of St. Mary Lowgate’s detached burial ground. After 1855 deceased parishioners would have been buried in Hull’s General Cemetery, opened 1847, although as this was a private/commercial cemetery it would […]

One interesting aspect of the parish plan of Sculcoates dated 1691 (see above and s.p.b.) is the field pattern, the rectangular fields evidencing enclosure. As this was prior to the onset of Parliamentary Enclosure the parish land must have been enclosed by private agreement. In other parishes where this happened in north Lincs. and in

This last blog in this series focuses on No 170 which I recently bought for 50p. at Hull History Centre and entitled ‘Roman Pottery and Kilns at Throlam near Holme-on-Spalding-Moor’, dated 1930. The picture reconstruction above is copied from page 3. Here again ‘Tommy’ Sheppard was leading an excavation. The number of this booklet in

Just to complete the ‘aside’ on Howden manor with a brief mention of three of the six churches within Howdenshire under the authority of the  diocese of Durham. The image above, taken from a leaflet produced as part of a restoration appeal for Hemingbrough Minster, shows a pre-photo view of St. Mary’s church from the

The image above is copied from Bilson’s article but not dated. It shows the buildings that once existed along the west wall of Howden’s Bishop’s Palace courtyard, the only surviving part now, and when Bilson was writing, being the rear wall. The image then was probably made in the early 19th or 18th century, as
