Uncategorised / Richard Clarke

The inscription on this plaque reads as follows ‘Dedicated to celebrate the centenary year of the first local authority municipal crematorium in the country’. This and my third blog of this week will be a collection of minutes from the Burial Committee archive relating to the first few years of Crematorium at Hedon Road Cemetery, Hull. The picture above is of the date-stone set into the lower wall of the Crematorium (disused since 1961, s.p.b.). It gives the year 1899 so

The picture above shows the south-west corner of Hedon Road Cemetery, on the left is the second ‘lodge’ (cemetery-man’s house) and to the right part of the perimeter-wall and roofline of Hull Prison. As had been the case in churchyards for centuries, burials in municipal cemeteries had to be paid for. From the minutes of the Burial Committee

The picture above shows the main carriageway at Hedon Road Cemetery with the ornate main gates beside Hedon Road being behind the camera. This municipal cemetery, Hull’s first, was opened in 1875, the initial area (beside the prison) was 17 acres in extent (later expanded) and had been bought by the Corporation in 1872 for
