South-West Norfolk 6

Today’s photo shows the north side of All Saints church, Boughton (not 2025). My parent’s and sister’s grave is one with a headstone roughly in the middle of the picture.

An interesting aspect of Ladbrooke’s work (s.p.b.s) is the fact that about 30 years earlier a person was doing the same thing in north Lincolnshire (the riding of Lindsey). Jean-Claude Nattes, almost certainly not his proper name, was sketching the churches in the area, and copies of these survive in Lincolnshire County Archives, Lincoln.

Rather than repeat myself I direct the reader to section three of this website and to my series of 12 essays on the history of the Low Villages, then click on the ‘Read’ button. Pages 15 -21 deal with the churches including my photos of the churches from roughly the same angle as draw by Nattes (this much like Hinton has done with the Ladbrooke’s lithographs).

One difference is that Nattes appeared to have no commercial incentive for doing what he did, whereas the Ladbrookes had financial backing in the form of subscribers to any volume published of 100 or more lithographs.

(to be continued, but I need to interrupt this sequence to give notice of next years guided walks).
