Today’s photo shows young willow herb shoots growing up from the perennial roots in April. Suited to wetland areas willow herb, and rosebay willow herb, grow to about five feet in height and make a grand display with pink flowers in August/September. Seen here mingled with a reed bed.
Another circular walk recently, and often, is from opposite the entrance to King George Dock, along Holderness Drain side to the footbridge over a section of the Alexandra Dock railway and on to a section of the ex-Withernsea rail line public right of way eastwards, passing what was Marfleet station one can continue out into the fields beyond Hull towards Hedon or turn right off the public right of way and follow the road to Hedon Road. On the way turn into Marfleet pocket park which is a well maintained shrubbery and a small children’s playground, metal benches in a pleasant secluded spot.
On the way recorded the following wild plants; hogweed, celandine, dandelion, alexander(?), cleaver, cow parsley, dock, privet bushes, chickweed, ground ivy, hawthorn (not yet in flower, late), white deadnettle, ivy, bluebells in flower (the first I have seen this year), groundsel, buddleia, and speedwell.
Near to the pocket park is Marfleet church and churchyard, another quiet secluded spot. Nearby is a Jewish cemetery still in use (I think).
