Today’s picture is a view from above Welton Dale and looking south-west across the upper Humber Estuary to Trent Falls with, on the horizon, a threatening Autumnal sky.
Twenty years after the enclosure of Myton Carr the remainder of Hessle Common was enclosed by Act of Parliament. This would have impacted on the southern part of Myton Manor and across the remainder of Hessle Common to the west. This has been studied – see in Section 3 of this website ‘A History of Hessle Common (now south-west Hull)’, particularly Part 2. Manorial courts, and indeed manors themselves, had little function after Enclosure as land previously of the manor was now in private hands. Also with the westward advance of Hull’s built-up area and with the occasional resulting boundary changes (see V.C.H., Vol 1 for the East Riding, introduction) the historic unit of Myton ceased to have any status although the name was initially kept alive (s. earlier b.)
