Another day dominated by high pressure, clear sky all day, warmth moderated only by a gentle easterly breeze. Painted garage door before watching wedding of Megan Markel and Harry Windsor at St. George’s chapel, Windsor Castle. Unconventional ceremony with address by American Episcopalian minister and other features celebrating Megan’s mixed-race heritage. Megan and her mother seemed to cope with it all very well. Amazing organisation and attention to detail by the organisers. If Megan’s smile is a ‘designer’ one then she does it very well. Painted round Rachael’s boiler pm and Molly to Baysgarth Park. Guided walk through history of Baysgarth Park last evening went well. Melancholy ponder while sat on bench – all things that waymark my life have happened – wish I had tackled life with more gusto. Evening watched Cup Final, Chelsea v. Manchester United, satisfactory only.
Other medieval earthworks include causeways – linear mounds to provide means of access across wetland. One such example survives locally (see above) where the core of an early causeway survives (in pasture-land) which linked the site of the small medieval port with the village on the rising land at the base of the scarp slope of the Lincs. Wolds. Edward I ordered causeways be built across the western side of the Hull valley lowlands to connect the emerging port of Hull (Wyke) with earlier settlements at the base of the Yorkshire Wolds dip slope (for further discussion of these points see Hull in the Beginning in Publications.
A largely unproven theory is that some early medieval church sites may have been built on a man-made earthwork to further elevate their site. Two possible sites regionally are St. Peter’s, Barton on Humber and Keyingham, Holderness (East Yorkshire).
Failed to finish this blog yesterday as watched ’till late the film ‘Megan and Harry’ (may have been other way round). Not sure as to the balance between fact and ‘media licence’ but if much was based on fact then, having combatted bigotry on a number of fronts, they are a fine couple and I wish them well.
