Hotham Hall, south of the village of Hotham, will be my last example on the north bank of the Humber Estuary. Built in the early 18th century and mostly of local limestone and white brick (unlike Houghton Hall s.p.b.) Hotham Hall remains a private residence not visible from the public highway but is from the public footpath linking North Cave and Hotham, the path following the western edge of the estate grounds. Just visible in the picture above is the cupola of the stable block which, as at Burton Constable, was built around a central courtyard.
The linear lake and surrounding woodland seen beside the road as one drives into North Cave from the east marks the southern end of the emparked grounds of Hotham Hall. This road junctions with the ‘Roman Road’ (A1034) between South Cave and Market Weighton, this originally being the northern extension of Ermine Street (s.p.b.).
