When recording recently comments on recent volunteering in Hull (City of Culture) for got to mention session on University site promoting the installation of a number of sculptures around the campus, these by an Icelandic sculptor and showing figures in various symbolic poses. It was a lovely sunny day and as ‘business’ was slow spent much time sitting at the front of Middleton Hall and taking a walk around the campus to see the figures for myself. The campus is beautifully laid-out and expansive and, apparently an ‘open site’ meaning the general public can wander round at any time. Astonished at how it had been developed. The above picture shows part of the original University College buildings dating from the late 1920s – now called the Venn Building.
Gave an illustrated talk last night to a vintage machine group at the Village Hall in Ottringham, south Holderness. My subject was the history of the ‘hutment colony at Aldbrough on the coast and to give some context gave parallel info. on development of Hornsea and Withernsea as resorts of the Holderness coast. Despite being different to their usual subjects the audience of 30 or so received it very positively. As I left the night sky was pierced by the illuminated spire of Ottringham church (see Landmarks and Beacons in the Publications section of this website).
