Pearson Park remained as Hull’s only public park for over two decades.
Both East and West Parks were the result of municipal initiatives with land for both being initially earmarked in the mid 1880s. The development of and history of West Park, on land bought previously from the North Eastern Railway Company, has been well documented in the booklet Gibson, Paul The West Park, a short history of Hull’s second public park (2011), a study incorporating lots of contemporary picture sources.
The picture above is a copy of one from One Hundred and Twenty One Views – Hull and District c. 1910 – see previous blog. It shows part of the boating lake with a footbridge over. Like many of the facilities created in late Victorian public parks the lake and bridge are long-gone, the site now be near part of the perimeter of the KCom stadium.
On Tuesday I guided a church studies day for some members of the Yorkshire Wolds Heritage Trust, a very wet day I’m afraid. More details to follow when Hull Parks section is completed.
