A while back English Heritage announced that where possible some programme for the 2020 Heritage Week should go ahead, while mindful of social distancing etc. I know of some places where, in view of the difficulties involved, their programme for this year has been abandoned, but John Netherwood, who organises Hull Civic Society’s programme for the Heritage Week, was keen to try and do something. Various ideas were explored but then considered unworkable, this to be much regretted as John and Mrs. Netherwood had, over the winter, prepared a very full programme and extensive booklet (as always). The final plan now is to not have talks in venues or sites visited but to have a website on which some of the sites are described and some of the talks presented as video/audio (illustrated) productions. I am to produce an illustrated audio input for my planned talk on the Early History of Hull’s Municipal Cemeteries, a first-time for me so fingers-crossed. My proposed talk on the development of Hull’s playing fields has had to be cancelled as with the History Centre being closed the necessary research came to an end.
